Doin' my business.

It's a beautiful walk to the community center. There are only three computers, but both times I've come there has been one open for use. The internet is lightning fast, too, and it's free. I'm glad we decided against buying internet for the apartment, after all. So far, not having it has contributed to my productivity overall. That's a good thing!

I'm starting to feel somewhat at home here. I still miss Ryan, and may adopt nine cats in addition to Radar to fill the emptiness. I might even call them by the names of people I miss. "Here Mom, want a treat? Ryan, quit scratching the blinds!" It might be kind of creepy, but it might make me feel better... you never know..

I'll be online a little more the next two days, since I have class in Oly. Hope all is well [love you, zoo-zoo].

Think first of others..

Anyone who knows me knows about my less than holy driving record. I totalled my first car at 16, my second at 17, and have damaged the third (and current) car within an inch of its life. It's a brave little Rav4, and it has kept me safe in many a dangerous situation.

This morning, angels surrounded me as I swerved to avoid a broadside collision in the middle of an intersection, and yes, it was my fault.

Seconds earlier, I was gazing stupidly at a man in a pink shirt. He was carrying groceries in his right hand and warning off traffic indignantly with his left. You guessed it. He was crossing the six-lane highway right in front of me. Why he felt the need to cross the middle of the highway I don't know, but I do know that there was a crosswalk not half a block down at the light. My shock at this man's lack of good decision-making skills distracted me just long enough that I apparently missed the light ahead turning from green to yellow, from yellow to red.

Just as my mind cleared the image of the pink-shirted man, my range of sight was filled entirely with a white truck, the kind used by cable installation or commercial painting companies. Time stopped and I sped up and swerved a half-circle the size of an entire lane around the front of the truck, completely and miraculously missing the entire front end.

What had made me speed up instead of brake? Instinct? Divine inspiration? Adrenaline? Whatever it was, it saved me from a very serious situation. I'm angry at the man who felt the need to cross a highway unsafely, but I'm sad and apologetic to the man whose truck nearly broadsided me as I flew through that red light. I wouldn't have blamed him one bit if he'd called the police on me for reckless driving.

I've been trying so hard lately to drive carefully, which is perhaps why my anger is (probably unjustly) directed towards the man in the pink shirt. I feel that if he hadn't appeared out of nowhere and distracted me, I would have noticed the light change, and none of this would have happened. However, inside, I do realize that I allowed myself to become distracted, and while the man may have contributed, the choice is mine whether to learn from the experience and grow, or to simply lay the blame on him and move on unwittingly. I choose to grow and only hope my attentiveness while driving can be improved.

X-posted to Fuzzy Radar.

I should leave now to miss traffic, but its such a long drive either way.. I wish I could play DS or read while driving! Something, anything, not to have to just sit in a chair and steer my car across the same stretch of highway once again. Boooring... Well, here I go.

Edit: Nine days! until my drive to Evergreen is 15 minutes shorter! *glee*

Hate abounds at Evergreen. The plywood barriers between the CAB construction site and sidewalk are plastered with what appear to be gang symbols (and by this I mean unintelligible words made up of crudely formed picturesque letters) and psuedo-intelligent social commentary (of the school "UP ANARCHY" with scrawled responses like "<strike>UP</strike> DOWN ANARCHY"). It is a school preaching tolerance filled with intolerant kids who couldn't figure out how to change society if they had Obama for a tutor. I regret not my education, but my choice of locale; deeply and daily.

"my [internet] is problematic."

I'm trying to fill the gaping hole (the 45min dead period right before bed) torn into me when I watched the last episode of Firefly. In the beginning, I looked for Angel episodes online - a perfectly good choice for my next private cult obsession, plus there are five seasons so the pain wouldn't come for many weeks. I couldn't find any episodes for free online, though... I could be looking in all the wrong places, but its still three or four weeks before I get NetFlix and I don't want to wait that long... Also, I couldn't find any Battlestar Galactica, either. If I don't get something either supernatural or futuristic into my veins soon I'm going to die in a nerdgasming fit of blood and vomit.

To train myself for our apartment, where we won't be ordering Internet service, I'm keeping my Interweb adventures limited to twice a day. I admit, I'm an E-addict... but having free internet (wireless and three desktops) in the community center makes getting internet service for the apartment seem a little extravegant for us, especially with all the other nice things we'll have there. So, until May 3rd, I'll be in training. :)

I'm actually finding this beneficial. I have time for all those books I want to read. Plus, Casey may be getting me a Nintendo DS for a late birthday present. First game I'll buy? The new FFVII: Crisis Core. I get little tinglies just thinking about it!

"As purveyors or consumers of such news, we are all complicit"
A journalist encourages consumers and the media to realize their negative effect on the lives (and sometimes, tragic deaths) of the stars. Here Spears is likened to Monroe, revealing painful insight about the propensity towards suicide by a media-battered star:

"Hollywood scandals are as old as -- well, Hollywood. And I am old enough to remember the death of Marilyn Monroe, a sordid story that turned Monroe into an eternal icon, even though it contained elements of drugs, suicide, depression, sex, celebrity, the mob and a cameo appearance by the president of the United States. But Monroe was a full-grown woman in her mid-30s when she died, and her life and death have a kind of tragic dignity connected to them, especially in comparison to the death of Anna Nicole Smith and the tribulations of Spears.
One of the terrible side effects of America's celebrity and media culture is a pervasive cynicism about addiction and mental illness. The paparazzi, a name created by Federico Fellini for a character in the film "La Dolce Vita," are the bloodthirsty mosquitoes on the front lines of our gossip wars. But someone publishes the images they capture. The resulting buzz attracts not just the tabloids and cable news shows, but the gossipy sections that turn the mainstream into the meanstream media. As purveyors or consumers of such news, we are all complicit."

- Roy Peter Clark, in The Sad Decline of Britney Spears and Our Voyeuristic Complicity

Wikipedia: "21 (twenty-one) is the natural number following 20 and preceding 22."

Age 21

In the United States (excluding insular areas), 21 is the minimum legal age at which one can purchase and drink alcoholic beverages.

It is also the age at which it is legal to gamble and work as a prostitute. Prostitution is illegal everywhere in the US except licensed brothels in Nevada (except in Storey County and Lyon County, where the legal age is 18).

In most states, a person who is 21 or over may also rent a car (although there are usually extra fees until the person is 25).

Twenty-one was the minimum age of suffrage in the majority of states until the introduction of the Twenty-sixth Amendment.

It is also the minimum age at which one can purchase a handgun or rent/use one without supervision in most states.

Twenty-one was the age of majority in England and Wales before that age was lowered to 18 with the enactment of the Family Law Reform Act on 1 January 1970.

I sit here with a glass of wine from the first bottle I've purchased on my very own, thinking of all the other things I could be doing with these 21 years under my belt. I think of the tips I make at Starbucks and wonder what kind of tips I would make in Nevada. I might be naive, but I had no idea prostitution was legal ANYWHERE, except maybe places where there aren't instituted, legitimate laws. The idea of gambling is about as attractive to me as the idea of prostitution. At least as a prostitute, you know you will go home with money in your pocket/g-string. Gambling, though, could send you home with empty pockets, having shot someone with the gun you're now allowed to use without supervision.

So I think I'll stick to sipping a half-glass of wine, tonight (Bolla Chianti 2005). I'm excited to say I can actually identify the flavors listed on the bottle! Coffee tastings (I learned at Sbux) are modeled after wine tastings; its fun to know how to locate which flavors on which area of your tongue. Makes a gurl like me from Bonney Lake Warshington feel right cultured.

Mercy for Britney?

A Broadway musical has replaced lyrics making fun of Britney out of genuine sympathy for the pain inflicted on her by the media. I'm really, really glad to read this. People are finally beginning to realize they are taking part in colosseum style entertainment, extending their downward pointing thumbs at a person who used to be everyone's favorite pop princess. The fact that she is not allowed to see 'her babies' breaks my heart; that a mother should be estranged from her children entirely, without even supervised visits, absolutely 100% breaks my heart. Also, the rumours about her former manager having ground up pills to put in her food, verbally abused her, and made deals with paparazzi, IF TRUE, are the most sickening rumours I've ever known and I pray that they aren't true, as no human being ought to be treated in that way.

Now, I didn't grow up a Britney fan. My pity for her situation has arisen only recently, when all of this mess started (her hospitalizations, her custody battles, all this mess). I wish I didn't care, but hearing her name makes my heart hurt and makes me just want to give her a big hug.
